Council calls for increased studies into medical schools (Bangkok Post - Thailand's English news) Posted: 11 Feb 2010 04:48 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. HEALTH More studies on the opening of international medical schools are needed to ensure these medical courses do not worsen the problem of doctor shortages, the Medical Council says. The council has taken into account the public outcry over the planned introduction of an international programme for medicine by some medical schools. Speaking after the council's meeting yesterday, Ittaporn Kanacharoen, the council's deputy secretary-general, said the community should think carefully before establishing international medical schools. Health advocates said the international programme would worsen the brain drain of medical workers from state to private hospitals. "We need to ask if such a programme is worth the investment and how it will benefit medical studies and the health system here," he said. Dr Ittaporn said no international medical programmes had been approved by the council. One of the council's jobs is to endorse the curriculum of the country's medical schools. However, it had endorsed some English-language programmes on medicine, including two programmes at the medical school at Srinakarinwirote University-Prasarnmitr campus. He said the English programme was different from an international course as it would be open for Thai nationals only. Medical students would still have to fulfil their contract obligations to serve at state hospitals after graduation, or pay compensation, Dr Ittaporn said. The council's secretary-general called on the government to consider seriously whether it wanted to continue the medical hub scheme as many projects designed to serve the scheme could be controversial and affect the health system.
