JOHOR BARU: Local undergraduates will be able to continue part of their studies at regional universities when the credit transfer system at the Asean level is introduced.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the credit transfer system, which is popular in European varsities, was among the new initiatives by the ministry to increase student mobility in the region.

"Currently, there are 71,000 foreign students studying at higher learning institutions.

"This number is still short of the ministry's target of 120,000 foreign students in 2015 and consequently up to 200,000 by 2020," he said during the closing of the International Student Leadership Conference 2010, organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Higher Education Ministry and Malacca government at Dewan Sultan Iskandar, UTM, Skudai.

The seven-day conference was handled by UTM's 2008/2009 Student Representative Council, and attended by 99 local and international students including those from Nigeria, Sudan, Iran, Indonesia and Thailand.

Saifuddin said besides introducing the credit transfer system, the ministry had other initiatives under its effort to internationalise local universities.

He said the ministry was currently rebranding the Malaysian Student Departments in overseas countries, holding strategic promotions to attract foreign students to Malaysia, and improving the quality of studies by adopting internationally recognised academic programmes.

Thirteen Evangel University students, along with professor of government and legal studies Bryan Sanders, will travel to Washington, D.C., March 3-12 to participate in the university's annual Washington Studies Program.
