Social sponsors can introduce international students to a slice of America (The Petersburg Progress-Index)

FORT LEE - For international students attending the Army Logistics University learning isn't limited to the classroom. It's also all about their experiences in the United States.

To help students learn a little about this country, the International Military Student Office at the Army Logistics University works with social sponsors.

"Basically, these are people who have an interest in the international students and a strong interest in the area," said Becky Joyner who works with the office. Joyner said that many of the existing social sponsors are retired military and may have served in one of the areas where students training at Army Logistics University are from. "There's a kinship with them sometimes."

She said that other past social sponsors have seen the opportunity as a good one for their children to interact with someone from another country and with a different culture.

"It's a good opportunity for the students to see how we do things, even every day things," Joyner said. "It can even give the students the opportunity to feel like they're part of someone's family. Often times they may have family back home and might be missing birthdays or other important events so if they're here helping a social sponsor celebrate, it might help them feel that closeness."

Joyner was quick to point out that social sponsors shouldn't feel obligated to take visiting students to places such as Williamsburg or Washington D.C. as the field studies program takes them to places of cultural note.

"The social sponsorship program is more about that personal experience, to see that aspect of life in America," Joyner said.

A brochure on the program recommends that social sponsors arrange some type of activity with the international student at least once a month. Currently there are 85 international students on Fort Lee attending the Army Logistics University, representing 43 countries. There are only about 10 social sponsors.
