KUWAIT: Asking Indian students in Australia to put the past behind them and pay single-minded attention to their studies, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has assured them that the Indian and Australian governments will take care of the security situation. "The Government of India is closely monitoring the developments, and between the governments of India and Australia, we should be able to see that the right kind of environment is created for the students. I would like to assure the Indian students that they don't have to be really worried about what has happened in the past," the Minister told journalists accompanying him on his visit to the Gulf region. Striking a conciliatory tone in the backdrop of the alleged involvement of Indians themselves in two high-profile cases of violence against their compatriots, Mr. Krishna referred to a panel set up by Canberra to monitor developments and take corrective action. "I hope the high-level committee will continue to monitor the developments… I hope they will continue to take the steps they have taken." Touching on high-level interactions to improve bilateral ties in all spheres, he said this was indicative of the two countries coming closer. New Delhi, alive to the presence of a large number of Indian students in several Australian cities, conveyed its concerns about their security on each occasion. Very recently, Mr. Krishna met his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith to discuss the "plight of students," and the Australian Minister assured him that the Federal government and the governments of the two States where most of the recently arrived Indians are concentrated would address their concerns through the high-level committee.
