All Bible studies are downloadable for immediate access, and there are a variety of formats: from one-session to multi-week studies, to studies based on the Gospel stories of Luke and Matthew, to studies based on movies depicting the crucifixion like The Passion of the Christ. Each Bible study works for personal use, or can be used in your Bible study or small groups, and Sunday school classes. Some of the most popular Bible studies include: Easter Week: Sacrifice and Salvation: This four-part study takes an in depth look at Easter week. Holy Week is six days of amazing contrasts. This series seeks to bring the conflicting events and emotions of the Triumphal Entry and the Passion into a unified whole. Rediscovering Lent: This download helps you understand the meaning of Lent, entering into closer communion with Jesus as you ponder the pervasiveness of sin and the grace coming at Calvary. This spiritual formation e-booklet will help you explore the history of Lent and consider what it can mean in your own life. Living the Resurrection Reality: The Resurrection is too good of news to be limited to only one Sunday a year. This 6-session Bible study looks at this phenomenal event in detail. It examines how the Resurrection transforms our lives as it grounds our faith and gives us a glimpse of our life to come. ChristianBibleStudies.com is also offering a free, downloadable resource for Lent. JoHannah Reardon, editor of ChristianBibleStudies.com, says, "The purpose of Lent is to examine our hearts and by self-discipline prepare for the coming celebration of Easter. Our free PDF will make the 40 days of Lent more meaningful, as each day includes a Scripture passage, an activity, and a question." International series kicks off Monday (Northwest Herald) Posted: 17 Feb 2010 11:31 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. By NORTHWEST HERALD CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County College's International Studies Department kicks off an International Film Festival series Monday, and it will continue through April. On Monday, "Lucanamarca" will be shown at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. "Lucanamarca" illustrates how elusive justice sometimes can be when a government investigates a massacre that occurred 20 years prior. According to a description from Icarus Films, in 1980, with an aim to overthrow the government, a Maoist group called Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) launched a guerrilla movement in the Andean region of Peru. Led by philosophy professor Abimael Guzman, this campaign of violence resulted in the April 1983 massacre of 69 women and children in the small farming village of Santiago de Lucanamarca. "Lucanamarca" documents the efforts of Peru's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to exhume the bodies of the victims to establish evidence in a trial of Guzman and other Shining Path leaders, and to provide the remains with a proper burial. The film festival continues through April 27 featuring the following films, all descriptions for which come from Icarus Films: "Oedipus in China," 4 and 6 p.m. March 9: In recent years, the development of psychoanalysis in China reflects upon the changing needs of a society becoming newly accustomed to expressing emotions. "Oedipus in China" explores some of the historical roots of China's contemporary psychological issues, including the impact of Mao's personality cult, the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, Chinese economic reform, and the dynamics of the single-child family. Highlighted in this film are interviews with Huo Datong, known as the "Freud of China," and Dr. Alf Gerlach, who, along with psychologist Margaret Haass Wisegart, is working to adapt psychoanalysis to traditional Chinese culture. "Seeds of Hunger," 2 and 6 p.m. April 8: More than 3 billion people worldwide suffer from malnutrition, with more than 1 billion starving. World agriculture is feeling the impact of global warming, population urbanization trends, and an increased use of grains for biofuels. "Seeds of Hunger" examines what its creators believe to be an impending global food crisis. Filmed in Africa, China, Latin America and the U.S., the film examines such issues as the politics of food security and scarcity, declining food production, the impact of genetically modified foods, water shortages, famine, food aid programs, and national food production, distribution and export policies. These issues are explored through interviews with farmers, financial analysts, and food buyers and importers worldwide. "Young Freud in Gaza," 2 and 6 p.m. April 27: Since the 2006 election of Hamas and the blockade of Gaza's border by Israel, the Palestinians have suffered an unemployment rate nearing 60 percent and a shortage of food, water and medicine. Professional psychologists also are in short supply. "Young Freud in Gaza" profiles Ayed, a young psychotherapist for the Palestinian Authority's Clinic for Mental Health. Filmed between 2006 and 2008 against a backdrop of intense violence, the documentary follows Ayed as he makes house calls and provides therapy and medication for a range of mental health issues, including depression, stress, anxiety attacks, and suicidal tendencies. The films are free and open to the public. Audience members are invited to join in a small group discussion after each film. Film festival sponsors are Medela, the Northwest Herald and Sage Products Inc.
