Rakugo is best described as Japanese sit-down comedy of comic story telling, with a history of about 400 years. The performer sits on a small cushion in front of audience and acts out stories consisting of conversations among several characters. Dressed in traditional formal Japanese clothes (Kimono) and usually equipped with paper fan (Sensu) and hand towel (Tenugui). These items help the performer express and act out the story. There are about 300 popular classic Rakugo today. After a few hundred years, people still find new laughter in the same stories. Master Katsura Utazo took his apprenticeship under Master Katsura Utamaru and started doing his opening acts for him in 1992. In 1996, he took the name Katsura Utazo when he was promoted to 2nd rank; and in 2005, he rose to the highest Rakugo Master rank. He has since been appearing in various venues in Tokyo and has been sharing the funny world of Rakugo all over Japan as well as in Thailand, Los Angeles, Brazil and in the Philippines in May 2009.
