— Angelo State University has expanded the menu for its second campuswide celebration of International Education Week, Monday through Friday.

Sharynn Tomlin, director of the Center for International Studies, said organizers tried to involve all of the university's colleges.

"There are a lot of things going on, a lot of people participating this year," she said. "Last year, we thought it was very successful. That's why we wanted to continue and even add."

International Education Week was launched in 2000 as a joint initiative of the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Education.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on the iew.state.gov website that student exchange programs promote mutual understanding.

"I've always believed that diplomacy does not just happen between government officials. It also happens between individuals through people-to-people connections," she said online.

More than 260,000 U.S. students study abroad annually, and more than 100 countries celebrate International Education Week, according to the website.

On Monday, international students registered at ASU will parade across campus carrying flags of their nations as part of the kickoff ceremony. There are at least 70 students from 22 countries studying at ASU this semester.

Tomlin and ASU President Joseph C. Rallo will host the kickoff event, which will include an announcement of winners of the 2010 Study Abroad Photo Contest. Entries were taken by ASU students during their summer study abroad experiences.

A highlight of the week will be several discussions on international affairs. At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Angelo State and visiting professors will hold a panel discussion on "North Korea: Defiant Failed State."

On Thursday, the ASU College of Business, Small Business Development Center and CIS will host the 12th annual International Business Symposium. Masaaki Kotabe, holder of the Washburn Chair in International Business and Marketing at Temple University in Philadelphia, will be the keynote speaker as he addresses the causes and effects of outsourcing.

A Hunger Luncheon on Thursday will feature Loree Branham, ASU assistant professor of animal science, speaking on "Hunger: A Global Problem with Local Solutions."

ASU's new Center for Security Studies will host "Kosovo: A Perspective from the Ground," presented by Michael D. Phillips, who served as military assistant to the U.S. ambassador to the Balkans during the conflict in the 1990s.

The week will wrap up with the annual Banquet and Talent Show, presented by the ASU International Students Association on Friday.

Most of the week's events are free and open to the public. Seating is limited at the banquet, so reservations are required by calling the Center for International Studies at 325-942-2083.

The complete calendar of International Education Week events is available online at www.angelo.edu/dept/cis/internatl_edu_week.html.
