Expert:'Expo effect' in China to last at least 10 years Posted: 05 Nov 2010 01:27 AM PDT The post-Shanghai World Expo epoch overlaps with the post-crisis era and the effect of the World Expo is expected to favorably impact China for at least 10 years, a local Shanghai expert Yang Jiemian said recently. Yang, president of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, said if the entry of the United Nations in 1971 was a milestone for China to integrate into the world politically and the entry of the World Trade Organization in 2001 was a milestone for China to integrate into the world economically, then the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is a milestone for China to integrate into the world culturally. Yang said from the time point of view, the world currently has entered a relatively long, difficult period of adjustment, known as the post-crisis era, which overlaps and interacts with the post-Shanghai World Expo epoch. The president analyzed his argument in three aspects. At present, international forces continue to move into favorable direction for developing countries — particularly for large developing countries. Emerging powers have contributed more than 50 percent of economic growth to the world, which increasingly progressed in political, cultural and social aspects. What's more, the post-crisis era is undergoing mechanism restructuring, which included the G20 summit, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The 2010 Shanghai World Expo promoted the development of the International Exhibitions Bureau and the World Expo business to a certain extent. On the other hand, during the Shanghai World Expo, the United States gradually increased efforts to contain China. The Sino-Japan relationship faced twists and turns in the past six months. The South China Sea area is also not calm. Yang said all these changes are the epitome of complex relations between countries in the post-crisis era. China has the impetus to deal with the current situation and move forward into the future. At the same time, global issues, such as non-traditional security issues that include terrorism, environmental protection and social conflicts, will be more prominent at post-crisis era. The Shanghai World Expo demonstrated the idea of a low-carbon economy. It also promoted cultural exchanges and issued the "Shanghai Declaration," which provides a basis for the world to solve current serious global problems. But China also needs time to practice these principles. The World Expo diplomacy left China a great legacy. Yang said that it has immensely invigorated and enlightened China's future bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. China is expected to develop into a global power. "Multilateral exchanges are increasingly important and difficult," Yang said, arguing that multilateral activities were the means of building the capacity to become a world power and also the prerequisite for China's growth. Yang said more than 73 million tourists visited Shanghai World Expo. It embodies a new way of thinking for the world, which is geared toward economic and social development, political system reform and changes of the development mode in today's China. It also put forward practices of the new way of urban development and coordinated urban-rural relations. The World Expo effect is expected to integrate Shanghai into the economic center and the shipping center in the next 10 years, Yang said.
