William A. Schreyer, benefactor of the Schreyer Honors College, died Saturday, according to a statement released by Penn State Board of Trustees President Steve Garban.

Schreyer, Class of 1948, was a former president of the Board of Trustees. He also served as chairman of the executive committee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, until his death. From 1984 to 1993, he was the CEO of Merrill Lynch.

Schreyer and his wife, Joan, were instrumental in contributing to a number of Penn State programs — together, they established the Schreyer Institute for Innovation in Learning and, in 1997, donated $30 million to create the Schreyer Honors College.

In 2006, the Schreyers committed another $25 million to the university toward improving study abroad programs and encouraging students' involvement in the global community.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said Schreyer's death is a loss that will be felt by the entire community.

"He's been a tremendous friend, outstanding leader, and a very generous donor to Penn State. We will all miss him," Powers said.

Though Schreyer Honors College student Anthony Shelton (sophomore-finance) never met Schreyer, he said he felt his presence through the opportunities afforded to him through the honors program.

"Everyone in the honors college can feel his contributions and everything he's brought to the university," Shelton said. "Without him, my Penn State experience would not be what it has been."
