| Posted: 06 Feb 2011 09:36 PM PST Human rights talk The Political Theory club's speaker series is hosting "The Relative Universality of Human Rights." International Studies professor Jack Donnelly, who has had a paper published the Human Rights Quarterly, will be speaking tomorrow in the Cyber Café at the Graduate School of International Studies. The talk begins at 5 p.m. Wine and cheese will be served. Students and faculty in all fields are welcome. 72 hours of writing "A 72-Hour Fiction Writing Contest" is being hosted by the DU Writing Program and Partners in Learning. The event will run from midnight Friday until midnight Monday. Contest rules and applications can be picked up in the Writing Center, room 202 Penrose Library. The first place winner will receive $75; second place will receive $50, and third place will receive $25. Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. A series of events celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. began yesterday and will run until Feb. 1. Tomorrow, a discussion titled "Putting Faith into Action: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King" is being held at the Hillel House 4:30-6 p.m. The following day, Thursday, the Spirituals Project is being showcased at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Center for Performing Arts. The event begins at 7 p.m. Friday, the Social Justice Interactive Theatre luncheon is being held in honor of King. The luncheon is in Driscoll Ballroom 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. RSVP is required by today. The MLK holiday and marade will be held in City Park downtown. On Tuesday, Jan. 22, The Women's College is hosting a talk titled "Social Justice Speaks." The event will run from noon to 1 p.m. in room 150 in the Chambers Center. Author Hermon Malone will be speaking at DU the following day, Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Sturm College of Law Forum 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. On Thursday, Jan. 24, "Red Power: Native American Activism and the Civil Rights Movement" will take place in the Ritchie Center Multipurpose Room from 4:30-6 p.m. An open mic night kicks off the final week of celebrations. "Open Mic Night - Poetry for Social Justice" will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Sidelines Pub at the Driscoll Student Center. The final event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Former African American KKK member, Daryl Davis, will speak at 7 p.m. in Davis Auditorium. Study abroad ice cream social The International House and the DU Involvement Team are hosting an ice cream social next week, Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 8-10 p.m. in Centennial Towers. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the study abroad program, hear stories from returning study abroad students and get help completing study abroad applications. The event is free. Panel discussion on living with less A panel discussion is taking place next Thursday, Jan. 24 on the topic of "Living Better with Less." The panel will answer questions about the role of fasting and self-denial in today's society, and what spiritual, psychological and physiological benefits there are to saying "no" to the contemporary belief that more is not enough. Member of the panel include Religious Studies Professor Liyakat Takim, Philosophy Professor Sarah Pessin and Dr. Michael Maley from the Health and Counseling Center. They will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Nelson Private Dining Room in Nelson Hall. The fun will last from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Erickson Byron Flexible Theater in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children over two Provost Conference The conference titled "Creating a Sustainable University: Strategies for Change" is focused around developing strategies that will support DU's commitment to creating a climate neutral and sustainable environment. The conference will be held on Friday, Jan. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Driscoll Center. The keynote address will be given by David W. Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics and Chair of Environmental Studies Program, Oberlin Collge.
