THE International Studies Program of Liceo de Cagayan University in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Northern Mindanao hosted the 7th Mindanao International Studies Society Convention with the theme "Diplomacy and Sustainable Development" on February 3 to 6 in Cagayan de Oro City.

The delegates of the convention were from Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, University of Southern Mindanao, Mindanao State University, Xavier University and invited guests from the University of San Agustin in Iloilo, the University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu.

A total of 263 delegates attended the convention.

The Mindanao International Studies Society (MISS) is an organization of International Studies students in Mindanao that aims to bring together students for greater amity and cooperation.

The organization was started by four founding schools -- Ateneo de Davao University, Liceo de Cagayan University, Mindanao State University and Xavier University.

Every year, one of the four founding member schools hosts the convention and this year is Liceo de Cagayan University's turn.

The convention opened on February 3 with Dr. Mariano M. Lerin, Liceo de Cagayan University president, giving the welcome remarks during the opening ceremony.

The second day included institutional visits to Pepsi, Malasag Eco Park and Nature's Spring.

The delegates also participated in a coastal clean-up along the beaches of Barangay Gusa and a mangrove planting activity.

Director Marlene Catalina P. Rodriguez, regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Central Visayas, was invited as resource speaker on the topic "Economic Development and Environmental Conservation: A Divide?"

Also invited as speakers were Mr. Mark J. Zinsky, Equity Research Analyst/Managing Director of 21st Century Equities Inc., who discussed conflict resolution from an American perspective; Hon. Leslie B. Gatan, assistant secretary to the Office of the United Nations and International Organization of the Department of Foreign Affairs, who talked about the roles of peace, environment and economic development as the way to progress and development; and Mr. Catalino E. Chan III, regional director of DOT Region 10 and the Sub National Coordinator of BIMP-EAGA, who discussed the viability of the tourism industry to enhance international relations.

The convention ended with a turn-over ceremony to Ateneo de Davao which will be hosting the next MISS convention.

The last part of the closing program ended with a statement on peace.

The convention is a chance for students of international relations from different parts of Mindanao and now Visayas to meet and get the chance to create a community that will lead the next generation to keep everything that it is to be. May this be a never ending tradition that will be passed on from generation to generation of International Studies students.

Greet your loved ones this Valentine season.
