Melbourne, Jan 29 : The Victorian Government has opened a new 24-hour support and welfare service that will make a real difference for international students completing their studies in Victoria.

At the opening of the Victorian Government's new International Student Care Service (ISCS) in Carlton, Premier John Brumby said students from overseas would now have greater access to a range of accommodation, counselling, legal, emergency and welfare assistance.

"We understand that our visiting international students can feel isolated from family and friends, especially without a strong social network and they can find themselves disoriented in a new community where they might struggle with the language," Brumby said.

"This International Student Care Service - the first of its kind in Australia - is going to make a real difference to all those young people from all over the world who come to Victoria to live, work and study.

"The service is a one-stop shop where international students can get the help and support they need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Brumby said.

The ISCS provides a single point of contact for students in the event of an emergency, such as those in need of counselling, crisis accommodation and food aid, as well as contact with other welfare services.

Students can call a 24-hour phone line for advice and support or access the drop-in service in Carlton during business hours.

Brumby said Victoria had developed an international reputation as a great place to study and work and the Victorian Government was taking action to strengthen that reputation.

"Last year there were more than 190,000 international students enrolled in Victorian education institutions. International students make a significant contribution to Victoria's diverse, multicultural society and enhance our community in many ways," Brumby said.

Key studies to boost Bahrain's trade push (Gulf Daily News)

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 03:18 PM PST

MANAMA: Findings from a series of studies conducted in conjunction with the United Nations will help improve Bahrain's worldwide trading capabilities, it was declared yesterday.

They will offer Bahrain a more focused approach to handling World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiation rounds and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), said Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro.

He was speaking during the official launch of the studies, which form part of a new collaboration project by the Industry and Commerce Ministry and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project, entitled; "Enhancing Institutional Capacity for Global Economic Environment and Governance," is aimed at developing Bahrain's international trade and building a more competitive national environment.

Dr Fakhro was joined by UNDP resident representative Sayed Aqa at the launch, at the ministry headquarters in Seef.

The studies are based on field visits and interviews with government officials and private stakeholders, in addition to research through national and international data sources.

They focus on the issues of FTAs, international trade in services, the National Patent office of Bahrain, trade links with India and Pakistan, Bahrain's participation in non-agriculture market access trade and environment negotiations.

Dr Fakhro said the studies included important tools that must be shared by all.

"I believe that the conclusions and projections of these studies positively commend Bahrain's trade policy endeavours towards WTO commitments and Doha Round negotiations," he said.

"They also present a more focused approach for Bahraini participation in these negotiations.

"At the same time the findings also reveal that both WTO multilateral negotiations and regional and bilateral FTAs are relatively advantageous to Bahraini industries and to Bahraini industrial and services exports.

"The report provides a new prospect for the development and diversification of Bahrain's industrial sector, as well as the revitalisation and expansion of small and medium enterprises," he said.

"All this occurs with a view to achieving the goals and objectives of Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, through which the government aspires to shift from an economy built on oil wealth to a productive, globally competitive economy, shaped by government and driven by a pioneering private sector."

Dr Fakhro added that the ministry appreciated the active participation of the Bahraini private sector in the preparation of these studies.
