Recent developments in Afghanistan produced an interesting conversation with Dr. Jacek Lubecki of UALR, professor of International Studies.

Arkansas soldiers headed to Afghanistan to consult with Afghan farmers. A Presidential review of the state of the war expected Thursday. The sudden death of envoy Richard Holbrooke. These three developments made for an interesting conversation with Professor of International Studies, Dr. Jacek Lubecki.

First off, Lubecki thinks there is progress on the military front. But, politically in Afghanistan, things are much shakier. The professor feels that the death of Presidential envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, is a huge loss, and could affect the momentum of the peace effort.

As for withdrawal which is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011, Lubecki feels the President will follow through but the size of the war at the time will determine the rate of withdrawal.

The professor feels like Arkansas farmers who double as soldiers and are consulting Afghan farmers, can only help the situation. The move by the military is an attempt to get Afghan farmers to stop growing poppies which contribute to the manufacture of heroin.

Lubecki is cautiously optimistic about the war's future and feels like that's what we'll hear from the President when he issues his review Thursday.
