Doctor/Dancer Delighted by Shen Yun Posted: 09 Jan 2011 05:22 AM PST Many such people perform with Shen Yun Performing Arts in its three-day stop at Place Des Arts while another of them was in the audience Saturday night. That man was Dr. Jan Spacek, a Slovak-born medical doctor who also holds a degree in international studies and diplomacy from the Academy of Paris. His diverse background includes work with the United Nations and something a little more unusual. Mr. Spacek has also been a professional dancer. He performed with Lucnica, the Slovak National Folk Ballet, an internationally recognized dance group that includes musical performances and specializes in Eastern European dances. He said he heard Shen Yun was coming to town, he rushed to buy tickets. "As soon as I heard about [this] group, I immediately decided to buy tickets— I was one of the first," he said. From Chili to Japan, he has danced Russian, and Slovak dances in 23 countries. He could thus better appreciate the value of Shen Yun's dancers. "I congratulate this magnificent group, and especially the choreographers and the dancers executing dynamic changes and graceful movements, which are extraordinary," said the former dancer. Having emerged from the old Soviet Bloc and been forced to leave his country for his political beliefs, he can relate to the censorship faced by Shen Yun, which is not allowed to perform in mainland China. The show includes pieces featuring artistic renditions of the persecution of the spiritual practice Falun Gong at the hands of the Chinese regime in China. "I wish to all Chinese to rediscover their 5,000 year old culture so they can be happy and bring a certain stability in the world from all perspectives," said Dr. Spacek. With reporting by NTD Television and Yvan Pinard. New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts will be performing in Montreal through Jan. 9.
