Expert on religious violence to speak at Grinnell College Posted: 25 Feb 2011 10:11 AM PST By Special to the Daily News GRINNELL — Mark Juergensmeyer, director of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, will deliver a Scholars' Convocation lecture on "Global Rebellion: Religious Challenges to the Secular State" at 11 a.m. Thursday in Room 101 of the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center on the Grinnell College campus. An expert on religious violence, conflict resolution and South Asian religion and politics, Juergensmeyer has, since 9/11, been a frequent guest on CNN, NBC, CBS, BBC, NPR, Fox News, ABC's "Politically Incorrect" and CNBC's "Dennis Miller Show." His acclaimed 2003 book, "Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence" is based on interviews with religious activists, including Hamas leaders and abortion clinic bombers. His Grinnell Scholars' Convocation will be based on his widely-read 2008 book by the same title. Juergensmeyer,  a professor of sociology and affiliate professor of religious studies at UCSD, also will deliver Grinnell's annual Gates Lecture at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Room 101 of the Rosenfield Center. The Gates Lectures were established in memory of the college's second president, George Gates, and are intended "to bring to campus the very best of modern thought."
