International experts gather to discuss innovations in infertility management (Zawya)

Dubai, UAE - International experts  gathered to talk about growing infertility rates in UAE and discuss new advancements in medicinal treatment of infertility, during a two day seminar in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.  The gathering focused on growing infertility rates, both regionally and globally, and new advancements and techniques in the management of infertility, including the tailoring of patient treatment. The seminars also reviewed data and meta-analysis concerning efficiency and safety of recombinant over urine-based products for infertility treatment.

Professor Pasquale Patrizio, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Yale School of Medicine commented that "It is imperative to convey the message that fertility decreases after the age of 35, and becomes a serious problem after the age of 37. The concept of waiting one year of unprotected intercourse before seeking treatment is not applicable to everyone: women older than 37 should be seen after 6 months of unprotected intercourse otherwise there is a risk of losing precious time. The problem is that nobody talks about this issue, and it is important that awareness is raised in UAE as we are doing in other parts of the world. It is therefore essential that increased awareness is raised and that both men and women become educated and knowledgeable on the topic so that they can make the best informed decisions"

Treatment for infertility involves the administration of medications extracted either from human urine or via recombinant technology to women. Recently, concern has been raised regarding the administration of urinary-derived products. These areas of concern are the source, purity, traceability, safety and consistency of these products.  Some studies have demonstrated that there are contaminating protein impurities identified in urine-derived products, and lack of regulatory control when it comes to donor selection and urine collection, making it impossible to trace the donor. Many countries around the world, such as Australia, France, Switzerland, and the UK, have taken on a precautionary approach to urine-derived products.

Professor Pasquale who is visiting UAE for the 2 day seminar in Dubai and Abu Dhabi continued, "Many women are unaware of the many options they have when choosing an infertility treatment.  For one, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (known as PCOS) is a common disorder that reduces fertility amongst women. This disease is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, as well as an excess of androgens that can cause abnormal growth of body hair and oily skin. This syndrome is commonly associated with obesity, making it a very real problem within the UAE. Statistics reveal that, despite equally high rates of obesity in the US, within the UAE the incidence of PCOS cases is double compared to US. .

"It is to be well-noted that PCOS is not only an infertility disease. It is also a condition that may cause diabetes and high lipids profiles characteristic of a true metabolic disorder.

When patients suffering from PCOS decide to take action through infertility treatment, it is very important that they will seek advice from professionals experienced in both the metabolic disorders and in the use of correct dosages of fertility medications so to avoid risky side effects". Many times women with PCOS and with other types of infertility are treated with In vitro fertilisation (IVF).

IVF is therapy based on the use of gonadotrophins to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs. Eggs are then retrieved and fertilised in vitro with the partner's sperm. After fertilisation one or more embryos (depending on the age of the patient, the etiology of infertility and the quality of the embryos) are transferred to the uterus.
